This was posted a while ago, but I only just found it. I’ve only used couchsurfing once, and I made sure to stay with another female. It was in Hanoi, Vietnam, and she was had been rated by other travelers. She was very nice and offered to show me around a few places. I only stayed two nights, but I had my own room, which was really nice and gave me a lot of privacy. So I’m not an expert, but I wouldn’t ever probably stay with just a man, if I were traveling solo. But if I was with a friend, I would stay with a male host if he had a good review. Hope that was helpful.
